Saluting a teacher

Writer's picture: Guruprasad AthaniGuruprasad Athani

Most people are uneducated. This looks like a strong statement but wait till I explain.

They are all of course literate, they can read, write, add and subtract. Other than these, what other things do people use from what they have learnt at school and college?

Yes. People use skills needed for earning, like coding, testing, soldering, carpentry etc. Most of these skills are learnt while working.

I am not saying for a minute that people are unwise. They have a lot of wisdom, but they got this

through their experience with life around them. Behavior of people around us teach us a lot of

things. The constructs of the society and it's culture prepares us for our survival and possible

progress in our own lives.

When I say uneducated, it only meant that the learning from academics is very small for most

people. So, they naturally trust social systems and culture much more than what is there in the

books.

There is a small set of people who actually learn from books in addition to learning from life around. They are not just bookish; they know how to connect what is there in books to life around them. They know much more than what life around can teach us.

These are Gyaanis (people with knowledge)

A smaller subset of these knowledgeable people are also highly empathetic. They understand other's difficulties in acquiring wisdom in life. They help others in the process of growing up and acquiring knowledge needed for life.

These are the true teachers.

Every one of us would have encountered such individuals at one or the other time in our lives. They enrich our lives and change them forever.

I would like to salute them and thank them and would like to follow in their footsteps to become

one such teacher.

This is my pledge.
